Volcanic Columns

2019
Project

Volcanic Columns is a proposal for a visitor center at the Dimmuborgir lava field in Iceland. Drawing from the aesthetically dramatic landscape of the lava field, and its history rich in mythology and folklore, our proposal aims for an eloquent and mystical expression. Central to the design of the building is a dark rolling shingle roof held up by articulated, black columns made from 3D printed ceramic bricks that seem to almost shoot up from the ground as if they were native to the craggy landscape, while at the same time being curiously exotic. These distinctive architectural elements emerged from us being inspired by the mystical and impressive demeanor of traditional Nordic stave churches and the architecture of fantasy, that we feel harmonize well with the evocative surroundings of the site.
